Frequently Asked Questions

What does "extensive knowledge and resources" mean to me?
We mean our world-class faculty, staff, and alumni, coupled with our understanding of regional manufacturing strengths and our industrial contacts. Consider part of what we do as a clearing house for prototyping, manufacturing, testing and services.
What role do students play?
Students team with leaders on major-related projects, gaining hands-on experience on campus while companies see projects completed without on-the-job training.
How do BETA services work?
An individual or business approaches the university with an idea or project. The project leader assesses it for BETA Services fit, using criteria like project size, engineering, and student availability. After adoption of the project, the business, project leader and students meet to refine goals and formalize a schedule. The leader then begins work on the project with students.
What type of projects do BETA services target?
Most of our projects are mechanical, although we deal with other engineering and business disciplines. Design and development are our strengths. Tooling, test fixtures and machine design are other services. We also update old 2D drawings to 3D models and associated drawings.
How can BETA services help my business and the community?
  • We take projects you or your staff lack the time to complete.
  • We take shorter-term projects outside the framework of an internship or co-op.
  • Our students bring an enthusiasm and outside-the-box mentality to projects.
  • We can solve technical problems outside of your staff’s core competency.
  • We tie Trine to the community and provide valuable feedback on needs and trends.
  • Projects bring real-world applications and invaluable work experience to our students.
  • We provide a cost-effective means for new product innovation.
How are projects funded?
Clients pay fees, dependent on project scope and discipline. Work can be quoted on a time and material basis. Contact Wayne Mortorff at mortorffw@trine.edu or 260.624.2420, Ext. 101.
