Do you have the desire to go back to school, but fear the worst about your math skills? This essentials course is designed for the returning student and will strengthen their ability to work with basic mathematics, including some entry level algebra. The course offers a review of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Instruction into the meaning and use of proportions, formulas, ratios, signed numbers, and measurements is also undertaken. The goal of this course is to develop computational and problem solving skills, as well as number-sense. Please note that this course is the first in a three part series intended to bring a student’s math understanding up to a college entry level.

  • Operations and relations concerning whole numbers including exponents

  • Prime and composite numbers
  • Evaluating expressions and formulas
  • Simplifying terms and expressions
  • Operations with fractions and decimals
  • Applications of rational numbers including percentages
  • Introduction to irrational numbers and square roots
  • Work with basic measurements; linear, area, and volume
  • Operations and simplifying with signed numbers
  • Ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning
  • Solving math problems in realistic situations
  • Effective strategies for studying and testing
